Pottering About #6: The Mullet Report
Shooting like a silver mullet through inequalities
Greetings, readers! You may recall from a previous post that this last year, I opted to ditch the hair dye (again) and opted to go to the natural route. In that post, I described the options and tips I found for switching to silver hair and what I’d avoid if I did it again.
Enter the mullet
I want to let you know I’ve hit the mullet stage in growing out my hair. I’m through the hardest part of the transition to silver and now have all my natural hair color. Hooray! At least there’s that. As well, I’ve made progress in growing out my hair to my preferred length.
How the mullet happened
The last time I did go and get a cut, the haircutter said, “We can’t just have no transition between the top and bottom,” (she said it in French, though) and she proceeded to chop off most of the sides of my grown-out hair, leaving me with really short hair above my ears. I had my glasses off so I could only monitor the process in a blend of blurry unease and misplaced optimism. Now that I think about it, that’s not a bad summary of my mental state in general, at times.
Realizing that there are many, many worse problems in the world, I can’t make too much of this development. Indeed, now that some months have passed since The Incident, at least there is more hair there now. Yet, some bitterness remains.
If I did it all over again, I would say in the moment, “But yes, Madame, there can be a lack of transition. Please do not touch the regrowth above the ears.”
Therefore, although I would have normally gone to get another haircut since the last one, now, I am going to wait until it is at a safe enough length so that a second incident would not leave me with a mullet. Result: dry split ends, scraggly, no discernible hair cut or style. In that sense, it is not going so well, frankly. But, it’s just hair. Hair today, gone tomorrow.
I reckon it’ll be another couple of months before I can get a cut. Meanwhile, I am proceeding shaggily. It reminds me of certain dogs, the kinds with the bristly fur that sticks up and looks unbrushed even when it is brushed. (I actually like how those kinds of dogs look and I saw a cute one today when I was out walking around. ) I am very much looking forward to when it’s grown out a bit more and I can get a haircut that I like. I dunno, I might look into some conditioner.
I almost forgot to mention, the hair in the back currently flips straight out to the sides, like that hair cut that was popular in the late ‘90s or early 2000s.
In short, this phase is a pain in the ass, but not as much as when it was a mix of colors, or the short pixie.
I do find it somewhat positive that it isn’t fully grown out yet because it means I still have time between now and then. I like the idea of having time to do things I’m trying to do. Let’s see what is different between now and then, by the time my hair is grown out to where I like it. I hope, good things. I would still do the whole change all over again.
Until next time, take care,
Ellen
